I was thinking Wayne Shepherd also, running back from West Wilkes in the 80's. 2 time Coca-Cola Golden Helmet award winner and All-American tailback from Guilford College.

every time I see this question I think about the ones I know personally from East: James Barnes running back,Tony and Todd Welborn (had scholarships for baseball and football from ASU) Went on to play minor league baseball for several years, Mike Calloway already acknowledged on here. And Luke Samples. And let me say this Justin Call's Football Jersey would NOT be hanging anywhere without the QB he had (Samples)

Barber actually won a conference championship both his years at East and his brother Jessie did also 3 years later. What’s sad is that East doesn’t recognize either at all in their gym only Call’s jersey hangs in the rafters which is a big joke. In the history of East Wilkes only Call and Adams in B-Ball and only Samples in football is crazy. Considering all the great past athletes that played there.

I agree that James Barber is probably the most talented basketball player ever to play at East Wilkes. However, a previous poster said that he was part of a conference championship team at East which was the first and also the last one ever won. I am not old enough to know for sure but I feel confident East won some championships before him. They also won back to back conference championships in 98 and 99 in the much tougher Northwest 1a conference with Starmount, Elkin, East Surry, and Mt. Airy.

Division 3=Non Scholarship athletes. A lot easier to excel vs basically high school kids that couldn’t get do better. No way Call was 1/2 the player Barber was hands down.

Jack Groce was a great athlete I hear in Wilkes County and at ASU. He was my Head Football Coach at Watauga. He had a long career in the school system In Watauga he was always decent to me I respect him a lot even today.

Luke Samples EW set state single game passing yards record against 1998 1a State Champions Starmount Rams with 584 yds. Justin Call EW also set single season receptions that year also. Both state records have since been broken.
